Joy Barnard - President

I guess you can say I started my NDT “career” when I met my husband, Hannes. With him I’ve learned to love everything about NDT. His passion to make NDT training and the overall industry in South Africa better than anywhere else in the world has also become my dream.

I did my first NDT course (MT1&2) without his knowledge, arranged it behind his back with some colleagues at the Old Africa NDT Centre back in 2017. I had so much fun! My current designation is Financial Manager for Africa NDTC Vaal.

To be chosen as Honorary Treasurer for SAINT is something I’m very excited about. I look so much forward to working with the other SAINT Council members to make SAINT a modern, industry relevant, absolute asset for every NDT person and company in South Africa

Manfred Johannes - Vice President

Manfred Johannes studied Physics at the University of Pretoria and UNISA. He has been involved in teaching NDT since 1981 at the Technikon Pretoria and in 1989 he joined Eskom Engineering Investigations in Rosherville as head of the NDT section.

In Eskom he got involved in R&D in NDT, as well as in mechanised inspections, where a computer is utilized to drive a manipulator and stores the data for off-line assessment and interpretation. In 1994 he headed the team performing the first in-service inspection (ISI) of the reactor pressure vessels (RPV) at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station (KNPS).

In 2006 he joined the CSIR in Pretoria where he was involved in the development and localisation of  NDT technologies in the field of composite materials and later on in an endeavour to establish an inspection validation centre for NDT in South Africa.

Throughout his career in NDT he always had to ask the question: Can the NDT which is performed find the indications which will cause catastrophic failure. Through these studies he learned that NDT is not performed optimally  in most cases, as construction NDT is also applied throughout the life of plant, even though the type of defect which develops during operation of plant is entirely different from construction-type discontinuities.

Internationally studies were performed to assess the efficacy of NDT and to develop philosophies and procedures which minimize the inabilities of the NDT process. It is his passion to assist the industry in applying these procedures and practices to optimize the application of NDT in South Africa.

Manfred is an Honorary Member of SAINT and Past President of SAINT.  Manfred is also an Affiliate Member of the Professional Body for NDT SPBNDT.

Abdur-Rahman Mahomed - Co-opted Member
Garth Appel - SPBNDT Manager

I started my NDT career in 1978, re-mustering from an aircraft fitter to NDT and completed my initial training for ultrasonic and radiography at the Pretoria Technikon and the other 3 primary methods internally.

I joined Atlas Aircraft Corporation NDT department in November 1980 and completed formal Level 2 classroom training for MT, PT and ET under Eric Guest at the School of Applied Non-Destructive Examination (SANDE). Following completion of my in-house specific training, including training by OEMs in 1984 I progressed from Level 2 to Level 3 (NAS 410) in 5 methods and was appointed Responsible Level 3 for the company.

Following specific examination from numerous OEM’s, including Rolls Royce, Augusta Westland and Airbus they delegated Level 3 responsibility to me which included responsibility for the system, their specific training and examination of staff that worked on their product.

During my 30 years in the aerospace business, I gained experience in many areas of NDT, including but not limited to the following. Practical NDT on both manufactured parts and inspection of aircraft during servicing, Administrative Level 3 duties, Management of NDT, Quality of NDT including ensuring company system met international (OEM) requirements, Inspection of critical rotating components, Inspection of complex composite components using both automated ultrasonic and real-time x-ray equipment.

After early retirement from Denel in 2011 and running a small NDT and Quality advisory business, I managed the SAINT Professional Body for NDT through its initial SAQA recognition phase and subsequent first 5 years of operation. My current focus is to facilitate the re-recognition from SAQA for the NDT Professional Body and to drive the registration of the newly developed NQF qualification for NDT Technicians.
